The California Grizzlies Junior Marksmanship Team participated in a rigorous week-long summer training session at the Coalinga Rifle Club in June.

Here's a quick recap:

  • Early mornings and packed days: The kids are up and at it before dawn, practicing all shooting positions.

  • Learning from the best: Coach Jim is renowned for his wind reading training, a crucial skill for these young marksmen/women. Nationals will be a breeze compared to the wind here!

  • Teamwork and camaraderie: From practicing together to cleaning equipment, the juniors are building a strong team spirit.

  • Fueling up for success: Burgers, tacos, and seemingly endless amounts of food are keeping the growing teenagers energized.

  • Gear prep for Nationals: New backpacks and Hawaiian shirts were distributed, perfect for their upcoming trip to Camp Perry.

  • Strength training: Daily exercises like push-ups are crucial for maintaining upper body strength needed for accurate shooting.

  • Fun and relaxation: Evenings are spent roasting marshmallows, stargazing (including a glimpse of Elon Musk's satellites!), and enjoying camp life.

  • Project productivity: Daily range improvement projects helped to keep the Juniors working together and productive - from fixing Jim’s trailer to painting to cleaning up the cacti garden.

Overall Coaches were impressed with the progress the kids were making and everyone is excited for Nationals!

Special thanks to:

  • Coaches: Jim O’Connell, Lane Ichord and John-Alistair George for their time, patience and teaching guidances!

  • The Yang family for providing mini-fans for the juniors.

  • Families who donated groceries, supplies, and transported their respective Juniors.

  • The Coalinga Rifle Range for hosting the team.

  • The Sacramento Valley Rifle Club, The Richmond Rod & Gun Club and Jim O'Connell for their financial contributions towards some of the camp expenses.

  • The juniors themselves for their hard work, dedication, and positive attitude!
